Surveys without quality checks are essentially fraud magnets, as they make it extremely easy for dishonest respondents to make it through and collect their incentive. &nbsp;<br>&nbsp;<br>In a random selection of 61 surveys submitted to Toluna for scripting in August 2025, we found that 64% of surveys did not have <strong>any<\/strong> quality checks included in their questionnaire design. When quality checks are subtle and embedded, they don\u2019t interrupt the experience for real participants, but they trip up fraudsters Fraudsters recognise typical filters (e.g. \u00abDid you rent a car in the last 7 days?\u00bb) and can answer strategically. Instead, embed screeners in neutral groupings, e.g. \u201cWhich of the following activities have you done in the last 7 days?\u201d with a mix of targets and decoys. In the same dataset analyzed as above, the Toluna team found that almost 20% of surveys had obvious or leading screening questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-toluna-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4063a3ee280c636a057e5a09c47f08e3\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-cobalt-fusion-color\">Why it\u2019s important<\/mark><\/strong>: Fraudsters want to qualify for as many surveys as possible, so an easy screening section is like an open invitation. If they can\u2019t figure out how to qualify for your survey and keep getting screened out, they need to waste several survey attempts on finding a way in.<s> \u2013<\/s> I<s>i<\/s>n the meantime, honest respondents can fill your survey and take away opportunities for fraudsters.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-toluna-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cb37e4ca77ade81b2e3de5584f87fa10\"><strong>Use fake or unlikely options<\/strong>. For example, adding a made-up brand in a list of real car brands or adding \u2018space travel\u2019 to a list of hobbies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-toluna-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6cd4a1af8e343a217cc3778fca2ac7d1\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-cobalt-fusion-color\">Why it\u2019s important<\/mark><\/strong>: Fraudsters don\u2019t care about the content of what they\u2019re answering. They don\u2019t know the topic they\u2019re talking about and therefore it\u2019s more difficult for them to identify impossible or illogical answer options. This means they\u2019re more likely to fall into these traps.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-toluna-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-48cc1340a53537a6b79d6a4850c9d3c6\"><strong>Overstatement<\/strong> traps work well too. Include one or two rare or unlikely items in multi-choice lists. If someone claims they\u2019ve bought a DVD, car insurance, and chocolates all in the past seven days, they may be over-claiming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-toluna-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b1cd21e05d227d680dd1185f47d6f0c3\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-cobalt-fusion-color\">Why it\u2019s important<\/mark><\/strong>: Fraudsters have learned over the years that if they select a lot of options in a multi-select question \u2013 especially within the screening section \u2013 they have a higher likelihood of staying in the survey. Therefore, they often tend to select lots of options in these questions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-toluna-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8c2d26eaae6f47df0ae3b71674f2932a\"><strong>Include open ends<\/strong>. The balance is fine here, as too many open ends can annoy genuine respondents \u2013 however, open ends create an extra layer of complexity for fraudsters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-toluna-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-39f227c6f6ac5e015b93b0c15cbdefc2\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-cobalt-fusion-color\">Why it\u2019s important<\/mark><\/strong>: Fraudsters have to program their bots to give good open ends that are at the same time not repetitive. This creates an extra hurdle for some who will abandon the survey or not put a lot of effort into their answer and make it easily detectable through automated open-end checks.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-toluna-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6ac3914d1c8bd3d2bc2ea3cbc4329be7\"><strong>Leverage automation<\/strong> to remove poor responses in real time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-toluna-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c882879e21cef9217403a47b6fd96224\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-primary-cobalt-fusion-color\">Why it\u2019s important<\/mark><\/strong>: Fraudsters know that many checks happen after survey completion. By the time they\u2019re identified as low quality, they\u2019ve already received their incentive (which is often automatically awarded after completing a survey) and cashed out.
